Merseyside Army Cadets offers opportunities for young people, boys and girls, aged 12 to 18 to become involved in a range of different and challenging activities. The Army Cadet Force is sponsored by the army so many of the activities have a military slant. These include field craft, skill at arms, shooting, map reading, navigation, first aid and adventurous training. In addition, cadets can register for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and completion of the cadet training syllabus will qualify senior cadets for a BTEC Diploma in Public Service equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades A to C. Cadets are encouraged to develop their skills for life and the Cadet Force will play its part in moulding the citizens of tomorrow.
Merseyside Army Cadets has 32 detachments spread across the County from Southport in the North to Hoylake in the South, Kensington in Liverpool to Newton le Willows in the East. Detachments are commanded by a detachment commander with a staff of adult instructors. Most, but not all detachments are set up to take female cadets. The detachments are normally 25 to 30 cadets strong and at present there are over 900 cadets in the County. Detachments meet twice a week in a range of cadet centres, in TA Barracks, purpose built cadet huts, schools and community centres. The Army Cadets is a National Youth Organisation sponsored and funded by the army. Cadets wear uniforms and detachments are run on military lines where discipline is regarded as important. However, nobody in the cadet force is subject to military service.
Like any organisation, Merseyside Army Cadets’ success is determined by the quality of its leaders, particularly its adult staff. There are 175 adult instructors in the County. Senior posts are filled by Cadet Force Officers who hold the Queen’s Commission. The majority of the detachments’ staff are Sergeant or Staff Sergeant Instructors. Many of the staff have a service background, but whilst desirable it is not essential as full training is given to all staff members. All adults are security and enhanced CRB cleared to work with young people.
